Weeks One & Two
Flexi Physics

We have the Flexi Physics kit from the House of Science.

On Tuesday we explored Boinks!  These are small tubes of a material that has elastic potential energy.

Wednesday saw a group of kids making catapults.

A catapult is a device for launching or throwing large objects.

Most catapults throw large objects using elastic potential (stored) energy.

The elastic potential energy can be stored in a rubber band, spring or anything that will add tension to the arm of the catapult.

Tuesday - Boinks

Wednesday - Catapults

Week Three
Science Challenges

On Monday, we made paper helicopters.  We made a big one and a small one each.  The aim of the challenge today was to see which helicopter would fall to the ground first.

Our hypothesis was that the big helicopter would land first because it is heavier.

We needed to find somewhere up high to drop our helicopters so we headed to the playground.

In order for it to be a fair test we needed to:

Drop them both from the same height

Conduct at least three trials to make sure our results were consistent.

We found out that our hypothesis was right.  The big helicopter landed first.

On Tuesday we made paper planes.  We had seven different designs.  We made them and then flew each one to figure out which plane would fly the furtherest.  We each had a hypothesis as to which one would fly the furtherest.  We had one person flying the planes so that it was a fair test.  We flew them inside so that the wind was not a factor.

On Friday some of us had a go at making paper boats.  We needed to follow the instructions carefully.  It was soooo hard!

Here is the video we used so you can try it home.

Week Four
There's a lot going on...

There are a huge variety of thing happening in Ururangi this week. Some kids are working together to make a movie using the green screen.  Other kids are busy working on their products for Quiddage.  Lucas, Hunter and Lochy are busy painting pieces of wood to make into roads and houses to have at the Te Takaro shed.

Take a look at our photos...
