Mrs McIntyre wrote to us today!  Firstly she thanked us for being such wonderful Kaitiaki for the garden but she also informed us about our new Inquiry for Term Three.

Quiddage is coming back! But this time there is a twist.  We have a challenge!  We need to make a product that contains at least one recycled or reused material.  We also need to make our product using a ‘manufacturing process'.  We have no idea what that is all about, but never fear… we will find out!

Wonder

Screen_Shot_2022-05-16_at_2.37.55_PM-removebg-preview.png

The first step of any Inquiry is for us to brainstorm all that we know about what we are going to be learning about.  This helps us recognise what we already know and where we need to focus our learning.  We worked in small groups today to complete our brainstorming sheet.

What we found out is that we had loads of ideas of materials we could use and products we could make.  We knew a lot about money too.

What we didn't know about was the 'manufacturing process' so we know that's what we need to work on.  Here's a summary of what we came up with...

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Today with Mrs Lunn some of us learnt about the three Rs:  Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  We watched this video that explains the 3 R's.  Take a look yourself:

From watching the video we learnt:

Reduce means if you need to think about if you really NEED it.  If we buy fewer things, or if we turn off the lights when we aren't using them, we will make less waste.

Recycle is when we give a new purpose to an unwanted product.

Reuse is when we use things again and again for example you could use a canvas shopping back over and over again rather than using a plastic bag once.

We had a go at classifying everyday products for where we think in the Recycling Bins.  Take a look.  Where do you think things would fit?

Do you think you know where everything goes?

Play this Recycling Game and test your knowledge:

Exploring Product Viability

We looked at Product Viability.  We have set criteria that our Quiddage Products must have.  They need to be made from at least one reused or recycled material.  We also need to make sure that our product can be produced using a Manufacturing Process AND it needs to appeal to our customers.

We had a look at a whole lot of products that we COULD make.  We needed to fill in an organiser to decide if that product is a good product to make.

We had to ask ourselves it met all the criteria the Quiddage products need.

Take a look at an example of a completed organiser:

The purpose of this activity is to get us thinking if our Quiddage product meets all the criteria and if it doesn't what could we do to MAKE it meet all the criteria.

Manufacturing Process

Mrs Whitta is taking us through the Manufacturing Process.  Before we started with our learning, we wrote on our KWL Sheet - what we know, what we wonder and what we have learnt.

We watched this video to help us identify the 6 main types of Manufacturing.  Can you figure out the everyday types of manufacturing that we do?

The Manufacturing process is step-by-step actions that when put together create a product. Take a look at our tamariki working together to create their product.  We had one person cutting, one person folding and one person gluing.  Once these steps were complete the children had their finished product - kotahitanga - working as one.

Cut - Fold - Glue - Finished Product

 Tax

Just like in the real world, when we sell our products in Quiddage we might have to pay taxes.  We spent some time with Mr Lion discussing some different kinds of taxes and what things those taxes are used to pay for in New Zealand.

We also watched a video where we learned a pretty cool trick to help us calculate how much tax we should pay.  We then applied our knowledge to some problems to figure out how much tax we should pay for different amounts of money earned at different tax rates.

Act

We had a go at planning our own Quiddage Product.  We had to decide if we think it would meet the success criteria.  Take a look at some of our plans.  Do you think you would buy these products?

Now is the super fun part.

We get to make our Quiddage Products.

Market day is NEXT FRIDAY!

There is so much to be done!

Act

Hooray!

Quiddage day is finally here!  We have learnt how to complete a Sales Sheet and we've been practising calculating change.  We can't wait until our customers arrive!

Reflect

We took some time after Quiddage to do a Reflection on how we thought Quiddage had gone.  This is our PMI Chart.  We recorded the things we thought were a PLUS, a MINUS and the things that we thought were INTERESTING
