We were very privileged to have Allie from Kelly Sport come to teach us today about water safety.
She gave the children practical ways to keep themselves safe around water. This started with Mr Stick.
Stand the stick up in the water to see how deep it is before you get into the water.
Let the stick float in the water to see how strong the current is.
If the stick stays still then you are safe to swim
If the stick moves very slowly then you are safe to swim
If the stick moves too quickly for you then you are not safe to swim
When you are in the water
float on your back and imagine the sun or a cloud is pulling your tummy up towards them
Skull - stick your elbows to your body to keep the heat in your armpits
move your hands slowly to conserve energy
Take big deep breaths because then your lungs are fill with air and act like a natural life jacket
Even us teachers were blown away with these easy to understand skills that would help our tamariki out if they ever get into trouble in the water.
Tomorrow we are going swimming in our clothes... watch this space!
It was alright I guess.
WOW
It was so fun
